CoTown aims at stimulating local economy and civic engagement through a local digital currency platform based on blockchain technology. With our platform public and private organizations can engage their communities towards more sustainable and inclusive behaviors.
Basically, Cotown is working with local municipalities (Heerlen, Amsterdam), and provides them with a platform and mobile application as complete solution to create blockchain based local coin and ecosystem. Heerlen as a city has many small jobs that needs doing. Via this platform they can create tasks, get citizens to do them, review their performance and give them digital coins as a reward. Those coins are spent in local participating stores, stimulating local economy. Stores can exchange coins between themselves, or return them to city and get equivalent in euros.
In addition to this, Cotown has a French logistics company as co-owners, who have similar applications and services for French municipalities, as well as some Irish ones.
My involvement with Cotown is being their CTO. Cotown got a 2 million EUR pilot project and my role was to create a team of the developers and develop the whole platform from scratch. When I came in, the project was 1 year behind and in a need to hire a complete new team.
There were many business changeless including Covid pandemic, however with my help the project was successfully finished by the end of 2022, Cotown got investment and we have a new team of the developers working on the new features.

Heerlen Heitje is a pilot app by Cotown that promotes local citizen engagement with government and businesses, creating a better living environment and a stronger community through engagement, projects and rewarding. This is created through to a circular economy involving local government, shops and citizens which benefits all.
It’s a blockchain project based on a collaborative web and mobile app involving community members in the completion of tasks toward the maintenance of common spaces as well as sustainable and social behaviors. A Smart Services platform allows optimization of city services by proposing challenges and monitoring their executions. Finally, the completion of tasks is rewarded with a token, which can be spent in local businesses.
